Land History & Management Overview
- Origin: In the 1890s, the Canadian government issued land grants of 10,000 acres per mile of railroad to assert sovereignty against an influx of American miners.
- Early Era: These large parcels, now managed by Monticola, were harvested for poles and ties from 1893 to the early 1930s before experiencing major wildfires.
- Transition: The remaining forest was high-graded and sold off up until the 1960s, often to German landowners seeking a Cold War safe haven.
- Current Goals: Today, the lands are managed as a long-term investment under the Private Managed Forest Land Act, focusing on financial sustainability, asset preservation, and resource improvement.
- Modernization: In 2016, Monticola introduced harvesters and forwarders to mechanize partial harvesting operations.
